Description

About Alarm.com

Alarm.com provides the leading cloud platform for smart security and IoT, powering millions of home and business experiences. Our systems integrate devices, cloud services, APIs, and event-driven workflows into a unified ecosystem used by internal teams and external partners around the world.

About the Team

This role sits at the intersection of two strategically important areas of Alarm.com's engineering organization: Strategic Partner eXcellence (SPX) Dev and ice Platform.

SPX establishes the partner enablement function for Alarm.com's highest-value PaaS integrations. The team architects and maintains the Core Partner Platform — shared edge services, event pipelines, authentication infrastructure, and integration patterns — that allow strategic partners to build reliably on top of Alarm.com's stack.

Device Platform builds and evolves the foundational shared capabilities that underpin Alarm.com's connected device ecosystem. This spans the full arc of how devices are modeled, integrated, and managed on the platform — from the APIs and event pipelines that expose device state and commands, to the lifecycle management flows that govern how devices are provisioned and maintained, to the transport and protocol infrastructure that connects physical devices to the platform at scale.

These two areas are deeply connected. The partner-facing platform depends on the device platform being reliable, well-bounded, and evolvable. An SE II in this space contributes meaningfully to both — building and maintaining the platform capabilities that teams and partners depend on, and growing their technical ownership over time.

The team is led by an Engineering Manager and supported by a senior Architect. The SE II hired into this role will work in close partnership with senior engineers and the broader team, taking on increasing ownership of technical work within a well-supported structure.

The Role

We are hiring a Software Engineer II to contribute to the SPX and Device Platform domains as a capable, independent individual contributor.

At Alarm.com, the SE II carries a clear mandate: independently complete technical tasks with good quality, take meaningful ownership of their work, and grow steadily toward leading small projects end-to-end. This is a hands-on engineering role. The SE II writes production code, participates in design and code reviews, contributes to project delivery, and develops the technical and process fluency needed to operate with increasing autonomy.

Projects span device APIs, event pipelines, device lifecycle management, and partner-facing platform capabilities. The SE II is expected to complete assigned work with high-level direction, seek out the information they need to succeed, and communicate proactively about progress and blockers.

Success in this role requires solid programming fundamentals, growing familiarity with Alarm.com's architecture and processes, and the professional communication skills to collaborate effectively across engineering, QE, PM, and operations. This is a growth role — the right person will be on a clear trajectory toward Senior SE, demonstrating increasing independence, ownership, and technical judgment over time.

What You'll Do

Technical Delivery & Code Quality

  • Write and maintain high-quality backend code across the SPX and Device Platform domains, including device state and command APIs, event pipelines, device lifecycle management flows, and partner-facing integration components.
  • Complete assigned tasks and features independently with high-level direction, seeking out information and context as needed to deliver good outcomes.
  • Participate actively in code reviews — both receiving feedback and providing thoughtful, constructive review on peers' work.
  • Ensure the code you write is correct, well-tested, and maintainable — treating documentation and testing as first-class engineering concerns, not afterthoughts.
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues across environments, applying systematic reasoning to identify root causes and deliver durable fixes.

Project Ownership & Delivery

  • Take meaningful ownership of your work across the full development cycle — from design through implementation, testing, and release.
  • Lead small, single-engineer projects or well-scoped workstreams with minimal guidance, including producing design documents, managing day-to-day tasks, and communicating project status and milestones clearly.
  • Contribute meaningfully to moderately complex, multi-engineer projects — understanding your scope, executing reliably, and raising blockers early.
  • Communicate proactively about progress, risks, and estimates — avoiding surprises for your team and manager.

Technical Growth & Collaboration

  • Develop working knowledge of Alarm.com's architecture, codebase, and the systems owned by SPX and Device Platform — understanding which teams own which components and how they interact.
  • Build familiarity with Alarm.com's development processes — spec/design, build, QE, ops — and understand how engineering, QE, PM, and PgM work together to deliver software.
  • Assist with onboarding of more junior engineers, answering specific technical and process questions about projects you have worked on.
  • Participate in design discussions and contribute technically sound ideas within your area of expertise.

Operational Awareness

  • Write code that is observable and supportable — with appropriate logging, error handling, and consideration for how issues will be diagnosed in production.
  • Participate in incident response and postmortem processes, contributing to the team's understanding of what went wrong and how to prevent recurrence.
  • Apply production readiness standards consistently in your work.

AI-Fluent Engineering

  • Use AI-assisted development tools as a consistent part of your engineering workflow — for drafting, debugging, refactoring, test generation, and documentation — while maintaining full review discipline over AI-generated output.
  • Validate AI-generated code rigorously before it reaches production: review for correctness, edge cases, security implications, and long-term maintainability.
  • Treat AI tools as a productivity multiplier that enhances — rather than replaces — your engineering judgment, and grow your fluency over time.

What We're Looking For

What Good Looks Like at This Level

An SE II at Alarm.com is a capable, independent individual contributor whose work is reliable, well-crafted, and delivered with ownership. The clearest signal is consistent, high-quality delivery: an SE II completes assigned work with minimal hand-holding, communicates proactively, and demonstrates growing technical judgment within their scope.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2–3 years of backend software engineering experience, with a demonstrated track record of independent task completion and growing project ownership.
  • Solid programming fundamentals: ability to independently complete a variety of backend engineering tasks with good quality, debug effectively, and write maintainable code.
  • Working knowledge of backend platform concepts: RESTful APIs, basic distributed systems patterns, and event-driven or asynchronous processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of assigned work end-to-end — from design through delivery — with proactive communication about progress and blockers.
  • Familiarity with software development processes: design/spec, implementation, code review, testing, and release.
  • Clear, positive buy-in toward AI-assisted development as an expected part of modern engineering work.
  • Practical familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows — including the ability to use AI effectively for implementation, debugging, and documentation while maintaining validation rigor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with .NET/C# and SQL Server; this is the foundation of Alarm.com's backend stack, though equivalent depth in similar ecosystems may translate well.
  • Exposure to event-driven architectures, message queues, or streaming systems.
  • Experience contributing to partner-facing APIs, integration-heavy backend systems, or shared platform components.
  • Familiarity with device-oriented systems, IoT platforms, or integration-heavy backend architectures.
  • Experience with observability basics — logging, error handling, and monitoring — in production backend systems.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools in a structured, disciplined workflow.

Why This Role Matters

Alarm.com is at a critical inflection point in its platform evolution. The shift toward PaaS partnerships, domain-aligned architecture, and a modernized device ecosystem requires engineers who can deliver high-quality work reliably, grow their technical ownership steadily, and contribute to a team that is building the foundations that dozens of teams depend on.The SE II hired into this role will contribute to how device data flows across the platform, how devices are integrated and managed at scale, and how partners connect reliably to Alarm.com's infrastructure. The right person will be a dependable, growing contributor — someone whose work is trusted, whose code is well-crafted, and who is on a clear path toward taking on more.

Please note that sponsorship of new applicants for employment authorization, or any other immigration-related support, is not available for this position at this time.
