POSITION SUMMARY
The Associate Director (AD) Clinical Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) position will focus on leading the FP&A support for the R&D Clinical organization and its associated functions including Medical Affairs. Reporting to the VP of FP&A, the Associate Director Clinical FP&A role will be creating financial plans and through insightful analysis & reporting, provide transparent actual operating expenses and their forecasts. This position will focus on managing the planning processes and serving as the finance business partner to the Clinical R&D organization led by the Chief Medical Officer. This position will interact with the Accounting team on a frequent basis and be responsible for recommending the necessary monthly & quarterly accruals for all Clinical functions.
This position is based in Watertown, MA and requires onsite attendance on a hybrid basis.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Become Trusted Business Partner for the Clinical R&D organization (and each specific department/function)
- Focus on understanding the key drivers of business performance and their financial implication on the clinical trials (and clinical cost category)
- Develop business insights and produce KPIs on each clinical trial. Recommend monthly and quarterly accruals to the Accounting team in partnership with the clinical organization. Work closely with the Accounting team to ensure accurate and timely monthly and quarterly financial results (engage with internal stakeholders and external vendors). Lead the monthly financial analysis for the Clinical R&D organization as a key contributor to the financial close
- Budget and Forecast Planning
- Lead the annual budgeting, quarterly reforecasts and long-range plan processes for Clinical R&D functions and Program leads, partnering with business stakeholders and the VP of FP&A to meet company planning deadlines
- Work with internal stakeholders to create robust functional financial plans, ensuring appropriate planning and accounting for expenses are maintained. Provide relevant information and insights to make informed decisions
- Work closely with Program and functional leads to gain awareness into key cost drivers
- Financial Reporting Improvements & Variance Analyses
- Responsible for leading monthly and quarterly variance analysis for actual and forecasted results for Clinical organization
- Responsible for developing and maintaining quarterly function and program management reporting, analytical reviews, trend analysis and dashboards for the Executive Team & BoD
- Responsibility for working with the VP of FP&A and other team members to continue improving the planning system and associated processes
- Develop and deliver monthly function, department and program financial reporting packages that provide actionable insights to R&D Clinical and program leadership teams
- Build and maintain robust financial tracking that empowers budget owners to manage actively their functional spend
- Review material business terms & conditions on Clinical studies including vendor agreements, contracts and purchase requisitions. Partners with Accounting on recognition of functional expenses in accordance with US GAAP and company policy
- Ensure associated financial risks and opportunities, both near and longer-term are identified and periodically reviewed
- Collaboration
- Be a strategic, insightful business partner to Clinical R&D functions and proactively develop and maintain effective relationships
- Partner with Accounting to assist with monthly & quarter-end close processes for expenses and accruals, budget vs. actual analysis and compliance with internal controls.
- Partner with Program Management to ensure key activities and drivers are aligned, within scope and appropriate timing
- Promote visibility and understanding of financial topics across the organization
- Ad hoc projects supporting strategic priorities, new indication planning, etc.
- Drive continuous improvement within the Finance organization to streamline processes, improve communication, and enhance the flow of information to the business
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree in Economics, Finance, Accounting, Business or related field
- MBA, CPA certification and/or consulting experience highly preferred
- 8+ years of relevant work and FP&A experience in the biotech life sciences sector, particularly public companies
- Track record of successes in small to mid-size biotech culture
- Proven expertise in developing comprehensive clinical trial financial models, with a strong track record of applying industry best practices to optimize budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills; expertise with a variety of financial planning (Planful / Adaptive) & ERP software (NetSuite)
- Financial statement knowledge and understanding of US GAAP
- Excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent project management skills and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally
The annual base salary range for this position is listed below. Actual pay rates are determined by considering multiple factors including qualifications, relevance of experience, education & credentials, subject matter expertise, and internal parity.
