Open Position – Mechanical Technician / Manufacturing Technician

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc.

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. is revolutionizing the world of surgical ophthalmology by developing a novel, AI driven, and imaging-guided surgical robotic system. Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. aims to expand access to care, provide superior capabilities to the human surgeon, and enhance patient outcomes. Microsurgery in general and Ophthalmology are subfields of surgery for which the surgical outcomes can be significantly improved by robotic systems to allow superior dexterity, precision, accuracy, and visualization beyond the human surgeon’s own capabilities.

We are entering an exciting growth phase as we transition from R&D into pilot-scale manufacturing and prepare for key clinical and regulatory milestones. We are looking for motivated, hands-on individuals who are excited to help build, assemble, test, and support the production of surgical robotic systems.

  • Commitment to Excellence: We aim to deliver superior patient outcomes and surgeon experiences
  • Passion for Creativity and Innovation: We are driven by new ideas and aim to push the boundaries of what's possible
  • Teamwork and Camaraderie: We achieve our best when we collaborate and work together
  • Welcoming of Critical Opinion: We are enriched by constructive criticism and support the best ideas
  • Personal Accountability: We honor our commitments and take responsibility for our actions

Horizon Surgical Systems Inc. offers:

  • An opportunity to build autonomous surgical robotic systems driven by image guidance and AI technology for the future of affordable, high-quality healthcare.
  • The opportunity to work alongside clinicians, engineers, and global leaders in cutting-edge AI, imaging, and robotics technology.
  • Competitive compensation and an excellent company-paid benefits package.

Horizon Surgical Systems is an innovative medical device startup developing the first ever robotic system to perform cataract surgery. We are entering an exciting growth phase as we transition from R&D to pilot-scale manufacturing and prepare for clinical and regulatory milestones.

We are seeking a Mechanical Technician / Manufacturing Technician to support the assembly, inspection, testing, and maintenance of robotic systems, prototypes, fixtures, and production hardware. This role is well suited for someone who enjoys hands-on mechanical work, is detail-oriented, and is eager to learn in a fast-paced medical device startup environment.

The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, experience using hand tools and basic measurement tools, and the ability to follow detailed work instructions. Some electrical assembly experience is helpful, but this role will primarily focus on mechanical assembly and manufacturing support.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform mechanical assembly of robotic systems, subassemblies, fixtures, tools, and production hardware.
  • Follow manufacturing process instructions, work instructions, drawings, and assembly documentation.
  • Use common hand tools and power tools to complete builds and rework as needed.
  • Perform basic mechanical inspection using calipers, pin gauges, torque tools, and other measurement equipment.
  • Support fit checks, hardware installation, cable routing, fastener installation, and general system integration.
  • Assist with basic electrical assembly tasks such as wire routing, connector installation, cable management, crimping, and light soldering as needed.
  • Help identify build issues, missing materials, unclear instructions, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Provide feedback to engineers and manufacturing leads on assembly steps, tooling needs, and design-for-manufacturing improvements.
  • Maintain accurate build records, travelers, inventory logs, checklists, and other production documentation.
  • Support general maintenance, organization, and preparation of robotic systems, workstations, tools, and equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and 5S-ready work area.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and operations teams.
  • Perform other reasonable duties as needed to support manufacturing and prototype builds.
  • Performs testing related to assembly process
  • Other Related Duties.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, and basic shop equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions, drawings, diagrams, and checklists.
  • Good attention to detail and willingness to ask questions when instructions are unclear.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to stay organized and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trade school, technical certificate, or relevant hands-on experience.
  • Experience with mechanical assembly, machine assembly, prototype builds, manufacturing, or production work.
  • Experience using calipers, torque drivers, pin gauges, or other inspection tools.
  • Basic electrical assembly experience, including crimping, soldering, wire routing, or cable management.
  • Experience working with robotics, medical devices, laboratory equipment, automotive systems, aerospace hardware, or precision mechanical assemblies.
  • Familiarity with 5S, inventory control, travelers, build documentation, or quality-controlled manufacturing environments.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-tech startup that is poised to revolutionize surgical robotics in ophthalmology.

Base salary range of $70,000–$80,000 annually. Total compensation includes stock options and an end of year bonus, plus a full suite of health benefits.
