Description
ThermalWorks has an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about sustainability and eager to be part of an innovative company that’s on a journey to transform the world’s infrastructure.
We are seeking a Safety Specialist to join the ThermalWorks team, working directly with the Environmental Manager, Field Service Supervisors, Lead Technicians, General Contractor, Safety Representatives, and the Customer Facility Operations teams, and focusing on administering the permit, training, inspection, and recordkeeping systems that the program requires. Audits compliance in the field and serves as ThermalWorks' point of contact for host site safety representatives, general contractors, and regulatory inspectors.
Key Responsibilities
Include but are not limited to:
Program administration
- Maintain the Field Service Safety Program, Operations Procedure and SSSP Template as controlled documents, including the annual review and revision control.
- Verify regulatory citations and penalty figures at each review so that no employee-facing document carries a stale reference.
- Track EPA and OSHA developments affecting field service scope, including AIM Act refrigerant management and NFPA 70E revisions, and brief leadership before an effective date arrives.
- Maintain equipment-specific Energy Control Procedures and the ThermalWorks safety forms package.
Permit and pre-task review
- Review energized electrical work permits for completeness before work proceeds, including de-energizing justification, arc flash and shock risk assessment, PPE determination and job briefing sign-off.
- Review confined space entry permits for the spaces routine to ThermalWorks scope, including atmospheric testing, continuous monitoring, attendant assignment and rescue provisions.
- Confirm that two-person requirements for energized testing are staffed before work is scheduled, and that no task requiring an attendant is assigned to a lone worker.
- Review Pre-Task Plans for energized, confined space, elevated and refrigerant work, and confirm the competent person designation is documented.
- Complete and submit the site-specific safety plan to the general contractor before ThermalWorks begins work on a construction project.
Field auditing and inspection
- Conduct documented inspections of ThermalWorks work areas and equipment, at minimum weekly on jobs lasting longer than one week.
- Audit lockout/tagout in the field, including verification that technicians apply their own lock in addition to any host or other-contractor lock and independently verify zero energy state.
- Audit refrigerant work for oxygen monitoring and A2L ignition source control, PPE selection against the task, glycol concentration verification, and tool accountability above open floor tiles and inside equipment cabinets.
- Close findings before work resumes in the affected area, and remove unsafe equipment or inadequate procedures from use until corrected.
- Exercise stop-work authority over any ThermalWorks activity presenting an imminent hazard, and support any technician who exercises theirs.
Training and qualification records
- Deliver or coordinate new hire safety orientation and refrigerant safety orientation, and maintain training records.
- Track qualification currency for lockout/tagout, confined space, fall protection and rescue, NFPA 70E qualified person status, aerial lift operation, and refrigerant-specific hazard training.
- Verify EPA Section 608 certification by type against the equipment each technician is authorized to service, and confirm no uncertified employee handles refrigerant.
- Verify subcontractor and temporary labor orientation, training records and PPE before those personnel begin work.
- Trigger retraining when assignments, equipment or procedures change, or when an inspection or incident reveals a gap.
Incident investigation and recordkeeping
- Maintain the injury and illness recordkeeping program, including the OSHA 300 and 300A and the required annual posting.
- Ensure every injury, illness and near hit is reported within 24 hours and investigated within 72 hours, and lead root-cause analysis for recordables and for near hits involving energized equipment, confined spaces or falls.
- Track corrective actions to closure and report incident trends to leadership using current DART terminology.
- Manage refrigerant release response and reporting, including agency notification where a reportable quantity is met.
- Administer emergency lock removal and post-exposure medical follow-up when required.
Host site and regulatory interface
- Serve as liaison to general contractor safety representatives and data center facility operations teams, including pre-job lockout coordination and the point of contact for isolation conflicts.
- Ensure ThermalWorks personnel comply with host site plans and customer permit-to-work systems in addition to the ThermalWorks Program, with the more protective requirement governing.
- Confirm no work begins in a live facility without the approved customer procedure in hand and reviewed with facility operations.
- Manage OSHA and EPA inspection response, and escalate in writing any hazard reported to a host site but not corrected.
- Support customer safety prequalification submissions and coordinate with the workers' compensation loss control representative.
Education and Experience
- Five or more years of hands-on environmental, health and safety experience in mechanical construction, HVAC service, industrial refrigeration, electrical contracting or mission-critical facilities. Equivalent experience as a working technician or foreman with formal safety responsibility will be considered.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction, with OSHA 30-Hour General Industry required within 12 months of hire.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of lockout/tagout including group and multi-employer isolation, NFPA 70E energized work practices and arc flash risk assessment, permit-required confined space entry, and fall protection and rescue planning.
- Incident investigation, root-cause analysis and OSHA recordkeeping experience.
- Current CPR, AED and First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
- EPA Section 608 Type II certification within 12 months of hire and Universal certification within 24 months, as a condition of assuming refrigerant recordkeeping duties.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record, and the ability to obtain construction site and data center access credentials.
- Ability to wear all required PPE, climb ladders and work from elevated platforms, enter confined spaces, and respond outside normal business hours.
Specific Skills / Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, environmental science or engineering.
- CSP, ASP, GSP, CHST or OHST certification, or active candidacy.
- Direct experience in data center commissioning or critical facilities service, including permit-to-work and method of procedure execution.
- Experience with A2L refrigerants, low-pressure centrifugal chillers, CO2 transcritical systems, or UPS battery systems and DC arc flash assessment.
- Environmental compliance experience, including regulated waste streams and refrigerant management under the Clean Air Act and the AIM Act.
- Experience building a safety function from an existing written program, and comfort operating without established HR infrastructure.
